US Pressures Israel to Suspend Ground Offensive in Gaza for Hostage Negotiations

According to the Jerusalem Post, Israeli tank forces commenced Operation Gideon on May 20, entering the Gaza Strip. The Trump administration has recently urged Israel to suspend its ground military operations in Gaza to facilitate negotiations for hostage releases.

The report indicates that the request includes two key components: delaying comprehensive military action in Gaza and conducting negotiations simultaneously with ongoing military operations. Although this request seems unrelated to the current humanitarian crisis faced in Gaza, Israel is undoubtedly under increasing pressure from its staunch allies.

Jerusalem officials have made it clear that as the large-scale Operation Gideon progresses, Israel will not withdraw from the engaged areas, potentially complicating efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement. Israeli Defense Minister Katz recently stated, 'Once the operation begins, we will exert all efforts until all objectives are achieved.'

However, Prime Minister Netanyahu has also indicated a readiness to temporarily suspend hostilities to secure the release of hostages. He stated on Wednesday (21st) that 'if there is an opportunity for a temporary ceasefire to bring back hostages, we are prepared to cooperate.' Negotiations between Israel and Hamas reached an impasse a week ago, with Israel insisting that the only agreement on the table is the 'Weikoff framework,' which involves Hamas releasing 10 hostages and a 60-day ceasefire, while Hamas insists on a sustainable peace agreement as a prerequisite to ceasefire, rather than a temporary pause.
