Kuo Zhengliang Critiques US Presidential System: Trump Has Only 40% Support Yet Cannot Be Stopped

After sparking the trade war, the US GDP contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter of the year, indicating its negative impact on the economy. Former legislator Kuo Zhengliang pointed out that while a former UK Prime Minister caused the UK stock market to crash, the cabinet system allowed for an immediate change of leadership.

Kuo noted that only 40% of Americans support Trump’s trade policies, yet the presidential system is unable to prevent him from acting. He emphasized that this political system has serious problems, likening Trump’s actions to those of former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, whose misguided decisions precipitated a crash in the UK stock market, but the cabinet system allowed for a quick replacement that solved the crisis.

He continued by stating that the US presidential system faces significant challenges, and scholars must reassess the system in light of the issues Trump has caused. With only 40% support for Trump, there are no effective means to stop his decision-making. Both Congress and the judiciary are powerless to intervene, and the public can only watch as he leads the nation toward potential economic crises, debt crises, and currency devaluation. Kuo emphasized that the Republican Party in Congress holds less than a 10-seat margin, and even if some party members defect, they cannot restrain Trump. He questions what kind of system this is and emphasizes the looming threat of another crisis with no apparent exit strategy for the US.
