Will US-Taiwan Zero Tariffs Devastate Taiwanese Agriculture? Yang Ru-Men Questions Cost Burden

In response to the U.S. proposal for equivalent tariff negotiations, President Lai Ching-te suggested 'zero tariffs between the U.S. and Taiwan.' However, Taiwan's rice industry is concerned this policy will have severe repercussions. Yang Ru-Men, the convener of the 248 Agricultural Market, emphasized in an online program that zero tariffs would mean Taiwan bears all additional costs. 'Are we expected to help American farmers foot the bill?' he questioned. 'We definitely cannot accept zero tariffs.'

He further stressed that if tariffs cannot be blocked, the government should at least define a clear bottom line. Referring to upcoming elections, he highlighted the importance of voters' sentiments, suggesting that if the government cannot protect local interests, they should consider the electoral consequences.

Yang also mentioned that many agricultural products in Taiwan operate under a quota system, which already includes zero tariffs within those quotas. He maintained that import labeling regulations must remain intact, asserting that the government should firmly uphold existing regulations.
