Grynkewich to Lead European Command and NATO Forces

On May 5, U.S. President Trump nominated Air Force Major General Alexus Grynkewich to serve as the Commander of U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), succeeding General Cavoli who has held the position since June 2022. This move aims to deepen collaboration between U.S. forces and allied troops, reinforcing defense capabilities in Europe.

According to Defense News, the Trump administration announced the nomination on May 5, and NATO’s North Atlantic Council subsequently approved the personnel decision. Pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate, Grynkewich will officially lead the 100,000 U.S. troops stationed in Europe and NATO forces, continuing efforts to enhance European defense capabilities in response to increasingly complex geopolitical challenges.

Major General Grynkewich graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1993 and is currently serving as the Director of Operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, responsible for formulating guidance for operational commands. He has been a key aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in executing global military operations. Between 2022 and 2023, he commanded U.S. Air Force units stationed in the Middle East, supporting Israel's air operations.

Additionally, Major General Grynkewich has over 2,300 flight hours and has participated in the development of the F-16 and F-22 fighter jets as a test pilot, providing him with a wealth of experience.
