Italy's MB-339 Trainer Aircraft Retired, Taiwan's AT-3 Set for Gradual Phasing Out

The Italian Air Force’s MB-339A trainer aircraft has officially retired after 45 years of service, with a farewell ceremony held yesterday, and the M-345 taking over training duties. The MB-339A has been essential for many pilots and forms the backbone of the 'Frecce Tricolori' display team.

Similarly, Taiwan's AT-3 trainer has also been in use for over 40 years since its introduction in 1984. The Air Force is planning to phase out the AT-3 in stages, with no specific retirement date confirmed yet.

During the farewell ceremony in Italy, a handover ceremony for the T-339A was conducted, marking the end of an era for flight training and the beginning of a new chapter.

While the standard version of the T-339A has retired, the improved MB-339PAN will continue to serve until replaced by the new T-346.

The AT-3 has played a vital role in Taiwan, serving not only as a primary training aircraft but also for the 'Thunder Tigers' aerobatic display team. As the new 'Brave Eagle' trainer aircraft enters production, the AT-3's role will gradually transition, accelerating the update process.
