Beware of African Swine Fever: Dead漂 floatig Pig in Kinmen Tests Positive

The Kinmen County Government confirmed this evening (17th) that a dead漂 floatig pig found on the coast of meandering kinning township on the 14th tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF) virus. The disease control unit acted immediately to disinfect the scene and incinerate the carcass, also activating emergency quarantine measures for nearby pig farms.

This incident was reported by the 9th Coast Guard Patrol Team of the Kinmen-Matsu-Penghu Branch, and samples were promptly collected. PCR testing confirmed that the virus nucleic acid was positive, with over 99% similarity to the strain circulating in China.

To prevent the spread of infection, the quarantine authorities, in collaboration with veterinarians from local townships such as Jincheng, Jinhui, Jinning, and Lieyu, conducted inspections of 25 pig farms within a 10-kilometer radius of the discovery site, confirming that the over 5,500 pigs on these farms showed no signs of illness.

Due to its geographic proximity to China, Kinmen has previously experienced incidents of floating pig carcasses. To ensure thorough disease prevention, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a ban on the transportation of pigs and related products from Kinmen to Taiwan and other islands until June 23. However, select producers that meet risk assessment criteria are allowed to export their products.

The disease control unit urges pig farmers to strictly implement biosecurity measures, including changing clothing and footwear, regular disinfection, and prohibiting unrelated personnel from entering the farm areas.
