Chinese Female Student at Munich University Under Spy Investigation

On June 11, German investigative media CORRECTIV reported that a Chinese female student at the Technical University of Munich is under investigation for allegedly leaking confidential information. The inquiry pertains to battery research associated with the university's renewable energy sector.
According to the reports, she is the sole subject of the investigation, which began in 2023. Investigators had notified the university at that time. A spokesperson for the university stated, "It is in our interest to clarify this matter, and we are fully cooperating with the investigation authorities."
Reports from Süddeutsche Zeitung indicated that approximately 45% of students at the Technical University of Munich are international students. Additionally, around 9,000 Chinese students are enrolled in universities across Bavaria, as reported by Die Welt. Ulrich Meyer, a spokesperson for the university, declined to specify how many Chinese students are registered, citing concerns it might lead to "overall suspicion."
Meyer emphasized that international cooperation and the legitimate exchange of knowledge are essential components of academia, stating that only through collaborative efforts can humanity overcome major challenges such as climate change and ensuring global food supply.
Bavarian broadcasting reported that universities in the state have become more cautious in recent years, implementing related protective measures. The Technical University of Munich is employing AI-related protective software, while other universities have sought consultation from the Constitutional Protection Agency and provided sensitive data training for overseas trips.
