US-China Trade Tensions: Trump Threatens to Impose 10% Tariff on BRICS Countries

This year’s BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has caught global attention. According to CNN, Trump is launching a global trade war under the banner of "America First" and is now focusing on the rising BRICS nations. The report mentions that Trump has threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on BRICS countries, stating in a cabinet meeting, "Any country that is part of BRICS must pay the 10% tariff."
BRICS members not only include Russia, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa, but also the recently added UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Egypt, positioning them as a significant response to the G7 supported by the US. Despite the expansion, experts warn that the political and ideological divisions among the member countries hinder effective action.
The report notes that Trump sees BRICS as a threat to the US dollar, stating, "They aim to harm us by undermining the dollar." The leaders of BRICS have called for discussions on a "cross-border payment system" to reduce reliance on the dollar, which, if implemented, could serve as an alternative to the SWIFT payment system. However, technical challenges and divergences among member countries need addressing.
Nevertheless, BRICS members unanimously agree that the global power structure favors the United States and its European allies. Consequently, the organization established the New Development Bank (NDB) in 2015, supporting India's and Brazil's enhanced roles in the UN Security Council. While China and Russia view BRICS as an anti-Western alliance, other members remain cautious in their approach.
