Japan to Establish Overseas Voting Locations in Taiwan for Japanese Expats

The Japanese government has announced plans to set up two overseas voting locations in Taiwan, allowing Japanese expatriates living in Taiwan to vote more conveniently. This change may be implemented during the upcoming summer elections, specifically at the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association's offices in Taipei and Kaohsiung.

Due to the lack of formal diplomatic relations between Taiwan and Japan, voting locations had not been established in the past. Currently, Japanese overseas voters have three voting options: voting in person at embassies or consulates, requesting ballots by mail to their registered electoral office, or returning to Japan for voting. Approximately 21,700 Japanese reside in Taiwan, with about 16,700 eligible voters.

According to insiders, this initiative was proposed by Katayama Kazuyuki, the representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association. Many Japanese residents in Taiwan welcome this change, feeling it will enhance their ability to exercise their voting rights.
