Italian Nun Zhao Xiurong Passes Away at 93 After Sixty Years of Service in Taiwan

Italian nun Zhao Xiurong, known fondly as 'Zhao Mum' by the local indigenous community, passed away today at 3 PM at the age of 93 after dedicating over sixty years of service in Taiwan.

Originally from Sardinia, Zhao arrived in Taiwan 65 years ago and devoted her life to early childhood education in the remote indigenous areas, particularly at the Qianshi Franciscan Kindergarten. Zhubei City Mayor Zheng Chaofang expressed his deep admiration, stating that Zhao Mum selflessly poured her love into Taiwan, likening her to Taiwan's own Teresa. Over 65 years, she warmed the hearts of countless families in the region.

Fluent in Hakka and indigenous languages, Zhao became a sanctuary for many indigenous children. Zheng recalled their annual tradition of bringing warmth to children on Children's Day. Their last meeting was on April 25, where she urged him to take care of himself and not to strive for perfection.

According to reports, Zhao made her last public appearance on May 3 at a Mother's Day celebration, where students and parishioners she had helped gathered to express their gratitude. Unfortunately, her health rapidly declined over the past two weeks, leading to her peaceful passing at the Catholic Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus Crucified.
