France Expands Smoking Ban Starting 2025, Fines Up to €135 for Offenders

The French government plans to expand the smoking ban starting July 1, 2025, prohibiting smoking in all outdoor public areas frequented by children, such as beaches, parks, and public gardens. Offenders will face fines of up to €135 (approximately NT$4,580). Catherine Vautrin, the Minister of Labor, Health, and Solidarity, stated that the goal is to create a smoke-free generation and aims for the complete exit of tobacco by 2032.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 35% of the French population smokes, which is higher than the European average of 25% and the global average of 21%. Multiple surveys indicated that 62% to 80% of French citizens support banning smoking in public places, with a significant majority also in favor of similar restrictions on e-cigarettes. Other European nations like Spain are also pushing for similar measures.
