KMT's Attempt to Recall Wu Li-Hua and Chen Ying Fails as Deadline Passes Without Submission

The Kuomintang (KMT) chairman, Johnny Chiang, launched a "recall to restrain recall" initiative earlier this year targeting two Indigenous DPP lawmakers, Wu Li-Hua and Chen Ying. However, after a controversy involving death signatures within the Pingtung County Party, the Central Election Commission (CEC) confirmed today (May 31) that no second-stage recall documents were submitted by the deadline, effectively declaring the recall efforts a failure.

The CEC stated that the legal deadline for the submissions was 5:30 PM on May 31, and under the Public Office Election and Recall Law, submissions received after the deadline would not be accepted, thus rendering the two recall attempts invalid. Wu expressed that this represented a rejection of improper recall efforts and emphasized the need for KMT leadership to acknowledge Indigenous dignity.

The KMT's recall campaign ended in failure, lacking public support, and may potentially face legal consequences. New Taipei City Council member Chuo Kuan-Ting highlighted the lack of communication from the central party following the controversies, criticizing their overall response.
