Su Junbin Questions Air Quality Data, Refutes Peng Qiming's Claim of 'Taiwan's Air Quality Ranking Second to Japan'

Deputy Mayor of Taoyuan City, Su Junbin, used data to refute Environmental Minister Peng Qiming's claims, asserting that 'indicators should not be used to justify pollution impacts!' Peng Qiming stated that 'Taiwan's air quality ranks second only to Japan' and urged people to avoid the phrase 'power generation by lung'. Su Junbin thoroughly examined the data and criticized Peng for comparing the latest data from Taiwan with outdated figures from other cities, alleging that he was seeking a favorable angle to rationalize and mislead the public.

He pointed out that although air pollution in Taiwan has gradually decreased over the years, the increasing electricity demand coupled with reliance on fossil fuel power generation could impact air quality, which is a significant concern. Su Junbin questioned the statement that 'Taiwan's air quality is second to Japan in Asia' and noted that Peng Qiming's analysis relied solely on the latest PM2.5 data from Taiwan without sufficient context.

He further stated that the data of 12.8 μg/m3 cited by the Environmental Ministry is based on air quality monitoring reports from the previous year, indicating that the monitoring relies on manual checks at only a fraction of the stations. He emphasized the need for the Environmental Ministry to protect the citizen's environmental quality and health by providing comprehensive information, rather than selectively presenting only favorable data.
