South Korean Man Sets Subway on Fire Over Divorce Ruling, Apologizes in Court but Arrested

A South Korean man in his 60s set fire in a subway car in Seoul due to dissatisfaction with a divorce lawsuit ruling, resulting in 23 individuals being hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The incident occurred on May 31 when the man doused the interior of the subway car with gasoline and ignited it. Following the court's judgement, the man was deemed a flight risk and a potential reoffender, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The individual boarded Seoul Metro Line 5, traveling from Yeouido Station to Mapo Station. After the fire, the train made an emergency stop, and passengers were forced to evacuate. Approximately 400 were aboard at the time, with 23 hospitalized and additional treatment for 129 others. Parts of the subway car were damaged, with an estimated loss of about 330 million won (approximately 719,000 NTD). When asked in court if he pleaded guilty, he responded, "Yes, I’m sorry."
