Thailand to Acquire Swedish JAS-39E/F Gripen Fighter Jets and Upgrade Early Warning Fleet

On April 4, Thailand announced the acquisition of the first four Swedish JAS-39E/F Gripen fighter jets from Saab, with plans to phase out its existing F-16A/B jets over the next decade to modernize its air force capabilities. The relevant plan is expected to be submitted to the Thai cabinet in July, with a final agreement anticipated by the end of August.

The military procurement plan outlines the acquisition of a total of 12 new fighter jets over the next 10 years. The initial phase will include four aircraft, with plans to acquire an additional eight by 2034. Thai Air Force Commander P. Padip revealed this information during a press conference, stating that the order will consist of three single-seat JAS-39E jets and one twin-seat JAS-39F jet. Additionally, the deal will include the procurement of Meteor air-to-air missiles and an upgrade of the Saab 340 early warning aircraft fleet.

According to reports, the Royal Thai Air Force currently operates over 50 F-16A/B jets, more than 10 JAS-39C/D jets, and over 20 F-5 series aircraft. The JAS-39E/F was selected as the next-generation mainstay fighter due to its cost advantages and continued logistical support and training capabilities, positioning it favorably compared to Lockheed Martin's F-16 Blk70 fighter aircraft. Saab has also confirmed cooperation with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to discuss contract signing and procurement processes with the Thai side.
