Japanese Emperor's Family Visits Okinawa to Let Princess Aiko Witness WWII's Pain

On June 4th, Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako visited Okinawa with their daughter, Princess Aiko, to participate in events commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. This marks Princess Aiko's first visit to Okinawa, and the Emperor hopes she can see firsthand the pain caused by past wars, emphasizing the importance of not repeating history.

Local residents welcomed the royal family, waving flags in honor. The Emperor's family visited the Itoman Peace Memorial Park, toured the Okinawa Peace Memorial Museum, and the National Okinawa War Dead Cemetery, where they laid flowers in tribute. Emperor Naruhito highlighted that as people gradually forget the war, it is essential to pass on the painful experiences and history of WWII.

During the visit, Princess Aiko kindly spoke to a local bereaved family member, wishing him health, which he found very honorable. On the 5th, the royal family visited the memorial for the evacuation vessel used during the war and checked on the reconstruction progress of Shurijo Castle, which was damaged by fire in 2019. Additionally, Princess Kako represented the royal family in Brazil to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Japan-Brazil diplomatic relations.
