Switzerland Increases Military Budget to Ensure National Security

The Swiss Parliament on the 5th approved an additional military budget of 1.7 billion Swiss francs (approximately 620 million New Taiwan dollars), raising the total defense budget for 2025 to 31.5 billion Swiss francs. This highlights Switzerland's move to significantly expand defense investments in response to increasing threats from Russia, despite its long-standing neutrality.

The additional military budget, led by newly appointed Defense Minister Viola Amherd, incorporates lessons learned from the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Key items include an 850 million Swiss franc investment in ground artillery systems and a 290 million Swiss franc upgrade for armored vehicles. There is also an allocation of 30 million Swiss francs for new reconnaissance drones to enhance intelligence gathering and battlefield awareness.

Additionally, Switzerland has collaborated with neighboring Austria to conduct ground troop drills and cross-border airspace surveillance tasks. Despite criticism from other political parties regarding an overemphasis on heavy equipment, arguing for resources to be directed towards cybersecurity and countering misinformation, the budget passed smoothly, underscoring the government's commitment to strengthening national defense.
