Upset at the World Seniors: Indonesian Badminton Champions Suffer Surprise Defeat

At the venue of the World Seniors Badminton Championship in New Taipei City, the Indonesian badminton duo of Hariyanto Arbi and Tri Kusharjanto faced an unexpected defeat against Yang Chih-Yu and Liu Ying-Hero from Taichung. After the match, Yang and Liu expressed their disbelief, stating that they never expected to beat the world champions even during their days as professional players.

Despite the defeat in the group stage, the Indonesian pair advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 50+ category, set to compete for the title tomorrow. Arbi and Kusharjanto are both well-known former stars in Indonesian badminton; Arbi was recognized as a top player in the 90s, while Kusharjanto won a silver medal in mixed doubles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In the match, the Indonesian duo lost the first game 18-21 but managed to take the second game 21-19. However, they ultimately fell short in the third game, losing 15-21. Arbi, despite battling an old injury, praised their opponents, saying, “They played wonderfully. Congratulations to them for their performance!”
