Blue-White Alliance Pushes for Legislative Session Extension Until August 31, Zhang Yishan Calls on Recall Group to Monitor Legislators

The Blue-White Legislative caucus previously collaborated to extend the current session to the end of July. Today (13th), the People’s Party caucus proposed to extend the session again until August 31. The Democratic Progressive Party caucus questioned the intent, suggesting it serves to broaden the judicial protection for implicated KMT members and aids the KMT in rescuing from recalls.

Political commentator Zhang Yishan urged the recall groups to “keep an eye on the legislators you want to recall” and to observe if they conduct market surveys or similar activities during working hours. If caught, they should immediately “post on Facebook”.

The proposal to extend the session faced criticism for allegedly providing a “judicial protection umbrella” for KMT members. In response, People’s Party leader Huang Kuo-chang retorted, “Is rushing to adjourn meant to facilitate recalls?” Zhang emphasized in the program “Taiwan Moving Forward” that all KMT legislators should attend sessions without taking leave and encouraged every recall group to monitor their target legislators.

Zhang pointed out that if recall votes happen on July 26, many KMT members could hastily resign, thus raising constitutional questions about whether the session extension is valid, which may require further clarification from the Legislative Yuan.
