Russia to Establish Independent UAV Forces; Putin Stresses Military Modernization

President Vladimir Putin announced on December 12 at a national military equipment conference that Russia will create an independent force centered on unmanned systems to further enhance military capabilities.

Putin stated that this new force will focus on the improvement of air defense systems, space systems, and the development of unmanned combat and automation systems. He highlighted that since the start of the "special military operation" against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Russian military has successfully destroyed over 80,000 aerial targets, including about 7,500 tactical and cruise missiles manufactured by Western nations, showcasing the strength of Russia's air defense.

He emphasized the growing importance of unmanned systems in modern warfare, asserting that the establishment of an independent force will enhance the efficiency and flexibility of the Russian military in unmanned operations. Furthermore, Putin pointed out that Russia's military development needs to broadly apply advanced digital technology and artificial intelligence to accelerate the intelligence and automation of weapon systems. This is seen as a crucial strategy for Russia to push ahead with military modernization in the context of global military competition, especially against Western countries.

Analysts believe that Russia aims to gain battlefield advantages in drone and automated combat technologies through the creation of specialized forces, reflecting its proactive approach in military technology.
