Daya University Partners with Springfield College to Promote International Education, Students Embark on Cross-Cultural Learning in the U.S.

Students Liao Rong-Hsuan and Chen Yi-Jie from Daya University's Department of Leisure and Recreation recently traveled to Springfield College in the U.S. for a semester-long short-term study abroad program, immersing themselves in American teaching methods and cultural exchange. Upon returning to Taiwan, they shared their study abroad experiences, expressing that they had gained a wealth of knowledge and significantly improved their language skills, boosting their confidence for future career development.

Liao noted that the experience allowed her to break through her introverted nature in terms of language, thinking, and interpersonal interaction. She mentioned that the classroom atmosphere in U.S. universities is lively, with classmates being responsive and engaging, leading to vigorous discussions and good student-teacher interactions. “The teachers are very patient and carefully answer each student's questions, motivating me greatly in my studies,” she shared. This experience not only strengthened her English skills but also inspired her to pursue graduate studies and enhance her planning abilities.

Another student, Chen, candidly mentioned that she felt pressured by the language barrier upon initially arriving in the U.S., but her English skills improved noticeably as her participation in classroom activities and daily conversations increased. She pointed out that Springfield College's curriculum emphasizes active participation and expression, with teachers frequently encouraging students to speak up rather than passively listening. In addition, she participated in campus club activities, played basketball with American students, and volunteered at a local elementary school to introduce Taiwanese culture through cultural exchange.

Assistant Professor Hsieh Pei-Ling from Daya University's Department of Leisure and Recreation pointed out that Springfield College, established in 1885, is one of the oldest universities in the U.S., renowned in health, sports, and recreation. Daya University has been a sister school of Springfield College since 2014, promoting faculty exchange and student exchange programs to provide students with diverse international learning opportunities. She emphasized that through short-term study abroad and mobile faculty courses, students can experience international curricula without studying abroad, broadening their international perspectives and enhancing their language and career competitiveness.
