EU Delegation and Guam Governor Visit Taiwan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan announced that European Parliament members Reinis Pozņaks, Beatrice Timgren, and policy advisor Jens Vornøe will visit Taiwan from May 25 to 30. During their visit, they will meet with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, and others, engaging in discussions with the Legislative Yuan, relevant ministries, and civic groups on topics including Taiwan-EU relations, regional security, and economic cooperation.

The Ministry highlighted that the European Parliament has demonstrated its support for Taiwan through various resolutions over the years. Simultaneously, American Guam Governor Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero is also visiting Taiwan from May 25 to 31. Last December, she hosted President Lai's transit visit with high respect. During this visit, she will meet with Lai Ching-te and Minister Wu.

According to the Taiwan Presidential Office, Lai will meet both the EU delegation and Governor Guerrero on May 27. Guam, an important U.S. military territory in the Pacific, hosts 9,700 U.S. military personnel and relevant hardware. AP analysis suggests that if Beijing were to take military action against Taiwan, Guam would likely play a key role. Although there are no military treaties or diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the U.S., it is expected that Washington will respond to any Chinese attacks, designating Guam as a gathering point for many of these actions. Since World War II, Guam has been a vital military outpost, primarily consisting of Andersen Air Force Base and numerous other military facilities. Approximately 30% of Guam's land is occupied by U.S. military installations.
