Lithuania Plans to Acquire Norway's Vanguard-Class Warships to Enhance Maritime Defense

According to a report by Army Recognition, Lithuania is in discussions with Norway to procure the new generation Vanguard-class multirole warships designed by Kongsberg to strengthen its naval defense capabilities and maintain stability in the Baltic Sea region. Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anušauskas met with Norwegian Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram in Vilnius on the 25th, where they announced that an assessment of the military procurement plan will be conducted to ensure the vessel's performance meets the requirements of the Lithuanian armed forces.
If negotiations are successful, local companies will also have the opportunity to participate in production and logistics supply chains, thereby enhancing Lithuania's defense industry capability and creating opportunities for the local economy and technology. According to Kongsberg's information, the Vanguard-class warship is approximately 130 meters long, has a beam of around 19 meters, and a standard displacement of 5,000 tons, powered by an Integrated Full Electric Propulsion system (IFEP), with a maximum speed of 25 knots (46.3 km/h). The vessel is highly automated, requiring only about 20 crew members to operate.
Additionally, the warship features an open architecture and modular design, allowing for flexible installation of various weaponry and equipment based on user mission requirements, capable of operating helicopters as well as surface and underwater drones. It will perform diverse tasks including port and infrastructure protection, anti-access/area denial (A2AD), anti-submarine warfare, mine sweeping, patrolling, and search and rescue, effectively improving Lithuania's maritime security response to various traditional and non-traditional maritime threats.
