Legislator Recall Vote Date May Be Postponed, Election Commission Reveals Latest Progress

The wave of recall campaigns continues to grow, with 31 legislators from the Kuomintang reaching the second phase of signing. In contrast, there have been no successful submissions for recalls of Democratic Progressive Party legislators, creating an extreme disparity of 31 to 0 between the two parties. Many citizens are curious about when the recall vote will take place. Recently, a message circulated on social media claiming that the 'Election Commission has announced: Voting will be held on August 23, 114 (Saturday) from 8 AM to 4 PM for votes for and against the recall.'

However, a fact-checking center has released an investigative report. To verify the internet claim, the center contacted the Election Commission and confirmed that the public voting day for the legislative proposal to 'restart the No. 3 nuclear plant' is set for August 23, while the voting date for the legislator recall remains undetermined and will be decided after the review committee's meeting on June 20.

The Election Commission further explained that, according to the Electoral and Recall Act, recall votes must occur within 20 to 60 days after the case is announced. If the committee does not make any decisions on June 20, the voting date may be postponed to the next committee meeting on July 18 or a special meeting for review, which could delay the voting process.

Additionally, the Taoyuan City Election Committee confirmed that it has not received any official documents regarding the voting date for the legislator recall and that the Election Commission is still conducting their committee review. Election Commission Chairman Lee Chin-yung stated on June 12 during an interview before the Internal Affairs Committee that the secondary review of the recall cases has been steadily returned, and the Commission has decided to hold a committee meeting on June 20 to review approximately 26 cases. If all review results are legal, the estimated voting period will fall between July 10 and August 19, but regarding whether the rumored July 26 will be the voting day, Lee stated this is one available option but remains uncertain at this time.
