China Engages Pacific Island Nations as President Lai Attends European Dinner Emphasizing Cooperation

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently hosted the "China-Pacific Island Nations Foreign Ministers’ Meeting" in Xiamen, where a joint statement was issued that "firmly opposes Taiwan independence" and promised $2 million to the Pacific island nations. President Lai Ching-te attended a European dinner today, emphasizing peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region and expressing hopes of signing an Economic Partnership Agreement with Europe.
President Lai stated, "On behalf of all Taiwanese people, I would like to thank the EU and European countries for their continuous concrete actions in publicly supporting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait." At this year’s European dinner, he actively reinforced relationships with Europe, stating the desire to promote trade and investment.
He emphasized the importance of cooperation, mentioning "this matter," and pointed out, "We see a new authoritarian group expanding their interests through non-market mechanisms and resource monopolization." While China is promising assistance to Pacific island nations and opposing Taiwan independence, President Lai is positioning himself to strengthen ties with friendly nations.
