Sister Chao Hsiu-Jung of Italy Passes Away, Leaving a Legacy of Devotion

Sister Chao Hsiu-Jung, an Italian nun, has passed away peacefully at the age of 93 after dedicating over sixty years of her life to the indigenous community in Hsinchu. Locals affectionately referred to her as "Mum", signifying a shared maternal figure.

She made her journey from Sardinia, Italy, to Taiwan at a young age and dedicated her most fruitful years to serving in various corners of the Hsinchu area, improving lives amidst the hardships of the 1960s when resources were scarce.

She established a Franciscan kindergarten to enhance education and aimed to uplift the children’s futures. In 1993, she began working with Tzu Chi volunteers, initiating routine monthly community support.

Volunteer Zhang Sun-Jun recalled their first collaboration, emphasizing there were no barriers between religions and the shared goal of helping those in need. Sister Chao always wished for a better tomorrow for every child.

In 2002, Master Cheng Yen spoke highly of her commitment during a volunteer meeting, noting her life was a devoted gift to the people of the mountains. Sister Chao passed away on May 30, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and inspiration.
