MAC Calls on China to Confront the Truth of the 36th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident

On June 3-4, 1989, the Tiananmen Square incident occurred in Beijing, shocking the world. To this day, terms related to 'June 4th' are considered 'taboo' in China, making it difficult for individuals to find relevant information online, with related phrases being swiftly deleted when they appear.

As the 36th anniversary of the Tiananmen Incident approaches, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) urges Beijing to respect basic human rights, advance democratic reforms, and attribute a more positive historical significance to the event by providing justice to the victims and their families. The MAC noted that while the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) proclaims it has achieved 'whole process people’s democracy,' it consistently ranks low in global democracy indices.

The MAC also highlights that the CCP continues to strengthen its oppressive one-party rule, stifling dissenting voices, thus endangering the democratic and human rights values pursued by humanity as a whole. The MAC calls on Beijing to respect the Taiwanese people's insistence on living in democracy and freedom, pursuing peaceful co-prosperity together.
