Michael Cunningham Visits Taichung, Discusses International Issues with Mayor Lu Xiuyan

Reported by Chen Shichang, Taichung – Michael Cunningham, a researcher at the Heritage Foundation's Asia Research Center in Washington, D.C., paid a visit to the Taichung City Government on the 5th, where he was personally received by Mayor Lu Xiuyan. The two sides had an extensive exchange on various topics including U.S.-Taiwan relations, recent international trends, trade, culture, and tourism development, with lively interactions taking place.
Mayor Lu noted that Cunningham has long been engaged in research on East Asian and global political dynamics, focusing on Taiwan issues and often elucidating Taiwan's strategic position in the world from an American perspective. His numerous articles have drawn international attention and have been referenced by many media outlets, demonstrating his impressive academic achievements and professionalism.
Mayor Lu also welcomed Cunningham to visit Taichung frequently to experience the local food culture and the charm of the city. In response, Cunningham expressed that due to his work, he often travels to Taiwan, having visited Taichung before and maintaining a favorable impression of the city. He also noted his deep appreciation for Mayor Lu's leadership and governance capabilities, especially with respect to recent urban developments.
The City Government’s Secretariat mentioned that the Heritage Foundation, established in 1973, is a well-known conservative think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C., known for its long-term and significant influence on U.S. public policy-making. Taichung is also recognized as the birthplace of bubble tea, and the city government prepared brown sugar bubble milk for attendees to enjoy together. The meeting included Deputy Mayor Huang Guorong, Deputy Mayor Zheng Zhaoxin, Director Lin Dingchao of the Research and Development Assessment Committee, and Deputy Secretary-General Lin Jiaxing of the Investment Promotion Association, where participants discussed various topics amicably.
