Two Female College Students Scammed in Cambodia; Grandfather Pays Over Ten Thousand for Their Freedom

In Taichung's Shalu District, an 18-year-old female college student Li and her classmate Lin were scammed into traveling to Cambodia under the pretense of a job opportunity. Seeking help, Li contacted her grandfather and informed him that the scammers were demanding NT$68,000 for each of them. Her grandfather sent NT$136,000 in two transactions, but the scam group denied the agreement and continued to ask for more money.
Li comes from a challenging background, with her family depending on her grandfather since her father's death and her mother being disabled. The two young women had become friends and decided to travel together. On May 27, Li was asked to contact her grandfather for funds, but upon police investigation, it was discovered that she had not yet entered Cambodia since leaving Taiwan in March.
A local community leader stated that while Li was being controlled by the scammers, she was still able to communicate with her grandfather. He expressed concerns that the scam pretending to be a cryptocurrency exchange was merely a tactic. Now, the grandfather has lost his money again, and rescuing the two young women has become fraught with difficulties. The school reported that Li had been frequently absent since March and, upon contacting her, learned she wanted to transfer programs.
