The Rise of Student Protest Movements Supporting Conservatives in South Korea

On December 3, 2023, following the declaration of martial law by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, many young people participated in protests supporting him. On January 19, 2024, in response to Yoon's detention, citizens stormed the courts, leading to the arrest of many students during the 'Seoul West District Court Incident.' Student protests supporting conservative ideologies are rare in South Korean history, where most student movements since 1960 have aligned with progressive parties.

The contemporary youth of South Korea grew up in an environment markedly different from previous generations. They no longer view progressives as the champions against tyranny but as new entrenched interests. Participants from the 'Free University' noted their confusion over why progressives blame former President Park Geun-hye for past tragedies.

These conservative students are acutely sensitive to issues of fairness and express discontent with traditional progressive policies, particularly regarding justice. They also demonstrate growing discontent toward China and are actively engaging in protests to assert their desire for freedom in Korea.
