Badminton Indonesia's World Champion Duo Makes Debut, Upset by Local Team

At the 2025 Double North World Senior Games badminton venue today (22nd), a surprising event unfolded in the men's 50 years old doubles category. The 'World Champion Duo' from Indonesia, Hariyanto Arbi and Tri Kusharjanto, made their debut but unexpectedly lost to local players Yang Zhi-yu and Liu Ying-xiong from Taichung. After the match, Yang and Liu expressed their amazement, saying, 'We never thought we would win against the world champions!' Despite the shock loss, both teams advanced to the semifinals of the men's 50+ category, scheduled to continue the competition tomorrow (23rd).
In this match, the Indonesian duo initially lost the first game 18-21, then fought back to win the second game 21-19. However, in the third game, Yang Zhi-yu's aggressive attacks kept the Indonesian champions on the defensive, ultimately leading to a 15-21 defeat. Although carrying an old injury, Arbi stated, 'The old injury doesn't affect my game,' and praised Yang Zhi-yu and Liu Ying-xiong, saying, 'They played excellently, congratulations to them.' He also commended the organization of the World Senior Games, stating, 'The atmosphere of the competition is great, and the organizers have done a wonderful job.'
Local players Yang Zhi-yu and Liu Ying-xiong, though both have previously competed at high levels, have stepped away from badminton after college and are currently teachers. Since deciding to participate last year, they have been training three days a week in preparation for the World Senior Games. 'We never imagined we would win!' they exclaimed after their victory, sharing their surprise at facing off against such renowned players.
