EU Unveils General AI Code of Practice: A Compliance Guideline for Tech Giants

The European Union has announced the 'General AI Code of Practice', aimed at encouraging businesses to adhere to AI regulations, focusing particularly on transparency, copyright, and the safety of high-risk AI systems.
This code is voluntary and serves as a compliance guideline before the official enactment of the AI Act, with penalties for violations reaching up to €35 million (approximately NT$1.225 billion). Large corporations and startups feel that the regulations are overly complex, requesting a two-year postponement; however, the EU has no intention of delaying the schedule.
The General AI Code of Practice was officially launched on July 10, targeting technology companies like OpenAI and Google, and requires transparency in AI models, clear copyright compliance, and security management measures.
Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, stated that this is a significant milestone balancing innovation and security. Industry stakeholders remain cautious regarding the code, with many tech companies yet to disclose whether they will sign it.
