Import of Japanese Beef Now Opened; Health Authority States Decision Based on Scientific Evaluation

The Deputy Director-General of the Health Promotion Administration, Lin Jinfu, stated that all risk assessments and field inspection reports have been published on the HPA's website to ensure full transparency. Based on these assessments, it was determined that only 1 in 150 million people is at risk of exposure. This decision to allow the import of all ages of Japanese beef followed a complete review process and comprehensive risk evaluation, grounded in scientific analysis.
The HPA noted that 90% of beef consumed in the country is imported, with Japanese beef accounting for just 1.4%. The most recent case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Japan was recorded in 2009, and the World Organization for Animal Health has classified Japan as a negligible risk country, indicating that all ages and cuts of beef are safe.
Additionally, the HPA conducted thorough expert reviews, holding three meetings, and experts visited Japan in October 2022 for site inspections. They determined that allowing imports based on scientific analysis is the best approach to maintain the highest food safety standards to protect public health.
