Concerns Arise as Imported Chinese Star Anise Fails Tests for Sudan Red and Pesticides

This week, the border inspection list revealed two batches of star anise (ba jiao) imported from China that did not meet safety standards. One batch tested positive for Sudan Red No. 1, while the other showed pesticide residues. This has raised public concerns, especially as Taiwan relies heavily on imported star anise.

Star anise is frequently added to braised dishes for its aromatic properties. However, the Food and Drug Administration has announced rigorous measures requiring 100% testing of imported star anise to ensure it is free from harmful substances. Consumers are urged to be more cautious regarding the sources of their star anise to ensure food safety.
