Analysis of Taiwan Strait Military Exercises Highlights Capability Gap; Retired General Warns of Hesitance to Fire First Shot

The Taiwan Strait defense military exercises commenced on the 10th, simulating scenarios of Chinese vessels entering Taiwan's 12-nautical-mile territorial waters. Taiwan's military has established monitoring protocols for the Chinese ships but has opted not to initiate action. Former Air Force Vice Commander Chang Yen-ting expressed concerns about Taiwan's military capabilities on the program "Headlines Talk," noting significant shortages in personnel and morale, along with a lag in weaponry against advanced Chinese systems.

Chang emphasized that Taiwan's lack of confidence prevents it from taking offensive action, as the forces are under-equipped, and the differences in weapon technology are evident. He pointed out that countries like the United States and Japan offer support but do not engage militarily, contributing to Taiwan's increasingly isolated security situation.

Additionally, he highlighted that the shortages in military personnel and low morale are fundamental issues preventing Taiwan from engaging offensively. He compared the situation to Ukraine's, where international support exists but lacks direct military involvement, thus hindering Taiwan's long-term military strength.
