Tainan Mangoes and Guavas Successfully Enter EU Market

Tainan's mangoes and guavas have successfully entered the EU market, with the city government collaborating with the central government to expand agricultural exports. The Ministry of Agriculture recently announced that the EU has officially opened its doors to the import of Taiwanese mangoes and guavas, overcoming quarantine barriers related to fruit flies and creating new sales channels for farmers.

Mayor Huang Wei-che shared insights into the challenges faced in accessing the European market and expressed gratitude to relevant central departments and the quarantine authority for their efforts in securing market access. He recalled attending a promotional event in the Netherlands last September where only samples were presented, but faced obstacles due to EU quarantine restrictions.

Following this, the city government worked with the Ministry of Agriculture to seek assistance from the quarantine authority to coordinate with the Dutch plant protection agency to clarify quarantine issues. Tainan has also been actively upgrading quarantine techniques for agricultural products, such as the modernization of the Yujing steam treatment plant, which processed the highest volume of steam treatment in the country last year.

Since 2019, Tainan's guavas have successfully been exported to the U.S. via cold treatment technology, becoming the first source of guavas exported to the U.S. from Taiwan. The city government stated that it will continue to participate in international food exhibitions in Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore, among others, to broaden its export markets.

The municipal government will continue to collaborate with the central government to enhance quarantine capacities and export competitiveness, aiding farmers in stabilizing their income. This successful entry into the EU market showcases the international quality of Taiwanese agricultural products, aiming for more high-end markets in the future.
